Mopeds have always had a negative image as being haulers of the studious types and being nothing more than motorized bicycles. Mopeds have developed well since their conception and are now more stylish machines that also deliver performance. Vectrix VX-1 is considered the leader in this class of vehicles and they are very road worthy, a fact that is borne out by the NYPD using these electric mopeds.

Vectrix VX-1 mopeds which were introduced in 2006 and were on sale in 2008 are more like small motorcycles, and are available in the United States and The European Union through its manufacturing plants in Massachusetts and Poland.

It sounds expensive at a price of $11,000 but a quick calculation would have you saving $750 in gas every year, in addition to the much lower maintenance cost if you are otherwise using a car to commute 30 miles a day and 250 days every year in your car. Vectrix VX-1 moped comes with a standard 24 month warranty and its large induction into the NYPD indicates that it can take a lot of heavy duty work.

Maximum speed on the Vectrix VX-1 is 100 km/hour, which is quite adequate for city running. Vectrix VX-1 range is 68 miles at optimum running conditions, though an average of 35 miles will be closer to actual. Its acceleration of reaching 50 km/hr in 3.6 seconds should please most people. The battery can last 80,000 kilometers and requires just two hours to achieve 80 percent recharge on a 110v connection.

Vectrix VX-1 moped is one of the few models of all electric vehicles that have been rated for use on highways and freeways and Vectrix VX-1 alone makes it worth its price. It is an ideal vehicle for suburban and city commuters where the running is limited. If of course you travel longer distances on an average, Vectrix VX-1 moped is not the right vehicle for you.

Besides these core statistics, which by themselves are quite significant, there are also other features on the Vectrix of which the LCD instrumentation is an impressive one. You can read the dials in almost any weather or light condition and always have information on speed and battery power. A very friendly user feature is the backwards mileage counter. This display will tell you how much further you can go on the charge in the vehicle, under the present riding conditions.

The overall weight of the Vectrix VX-1 is 450 pounds, and it also has a trunk under the seat that can easily hold your riding helmet. And of course your need to stow away your cell phone or iPod is also taken care of by the small glove box that is on the front of the Vectrix VX-1 moped. You can always opt for an add on cargo box if you are looking to augment your storage. So that saves you the trouble of carrying any backpacks if you so desire.

There is also a feature of regenerative braking on the Vectrix moped. To use this feature you have to turn the throttle forward and the moped will decelerate without having to use the brakes. This system also returns 15 percent of the power back to the moped and also switches on the brake lights, making it safe to use even in adverse traffic conditions. The Vectrix VX-1 also has standard disc hand brakes which can be used.

Later models of the Vectrix VX-1 mopeds are expected to introduce three wheel models, which will do a lot for its stability and control.
